In the beginning....

Malabo is the capital city of Equatorial Guinea, found in Africa. It is quite questionable why the republic of an institution would be named after the capital city of a country or why it was not named after a place in Nigeria. This section of this website is aimed at clearing the air to all these questions.

Back in the early 70s, Equatorial Guinea was ravaged with a bloody war. This led to many citizens fleeing for their lives and seeking refuge in other countries. Many came into Nigeria to seek refuge and somehow and were accommodated in various parts of the country.

For some reasons, some of the refugees were housed in the male hostels (hall 4, hall 5 and hall 6) in the University of Calabar. This meant that the hostels temporarily served as a refugee camp for the refugees. This left the hostels as a reflection of what was going on in the war ravaged nation and led to the male hostels to be named "Malabo".

Geographically, Malabo refers to the male hostels area (hall 4, hall 5 and hall 6). The students government heads the republic, so everyone under the students government is referred to as a Malabite for the males and a Malabress for the females. Hence, Malabo republic now covers everywhere the Students Union Government controls. This includes even the main camp hostels (hall 2 and hall 7).
